REGIONAL CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS STATEMENT ON LIVELIHOOD AND COMMUNITY DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT INTERVENTIONS UNDER LAKE VICTORIA ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT PROJECT (LVEMPII) IN THE LAKE VICTORIA BASIN
We, the participants of the 2nd Regional Civil Society Organizations Meeting of the East Africa Sustainability Watch Network held at Kisumu Hotel, Kenya on Tuesday the 4th March 2014:
A pilot project intending to contribute to livelihood diversification of the fishing dependent communities on the Islands of Lake Victoria, through introduction of alternative income generating activities-IGA is on course. The project is undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), under the implementation of a regional strategy for the Eastern and Southern African-Indian Ocean (ESA-IO) region program, and the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO).
Smartfish organised a second edition of its Trade event January 23 – 24, 2014 in Entebbe (Uganda), which attracted close to 100 participants. These were from: Burundi, Kenya, DRC, Madagascar, Mauritius, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The East African SusWatch (EA SusWatch) is a network of NGOs from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania spearheaded by Uganda Coalition for Sustainable Development (UCSD), Sustainable Environmental Development Watch Network (SusWatch Kenya), and Tanzania Coalition for Sustainable Development (TCSD). EA SusWatch Regional’s Secretariat is hosted by UCSD in Kampala, Uganda.
